18 March 2021 - Media Release - Fresh Plaza

The state of Himachal Pradesh is located in the northwestern Himalayan region of India. About 90% of the state's population lives in rural areas and depends on agriculture for their livelihoods. Apples are the main crop, accounting for 85% of fruit production in the area, and about 30% of India's total apple production.

The World Bank is supporting the Government of Himachal Pradesh in a project to improve production of the region's fruit crops; including apples, summerfruit, and tropical fruits such as mango.

In 2017/2018, New Zealand G2G helped lead and win a competitive tender bid with the World Bank in India. The initial contract is for three years, with a possible extension to seven.

With focus on temperate and subtropical fruits, the New Zealand team will provide expertise on technical developments that will support the project's goals.

The New Zealand expertise is drawn from public-sector organisations, industry bodies, and private firms. These include Plant & Food Research, AgFirst Engineering, Fruition Horticulture, and New Zealand Apples & Pears (New Zealand's pipfruit industry body).
New Zealand's apple and pear industry has the highest productivity in the world, averaging 65 metric tonnes per hectare per annum. From annual production of approximately 550,000 tonnes, two thirds of the crop is exported to over 80 countries around the world.

By harnessing New Zealand's expertise, the Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Development Project aims to generate better returns for growers, and create more jobs and better livelihoods for the people of the region.
