Fruit Fly – Know what to do

To date 10 fruit flies have been found at 3 different areas in Auckland (7 male Queensland Fruit flies in Northcote/Devonport and 3 male Facialis Fruit Flies in Otara).  In addition to the Controlled Areas, to reassure our overseas trading partners, MPI had to set Export Restriction Zones for both areas.

For the time being this means that the new requirements must be met by growers, packhouses, exporters and freight forwarders that deal with fruit fly host material intended to be exported to countries where fruit fly is a Quarantine Pest.

The first step is to check if your product is a fruit fly host material and if the country of export has fruit fly listed in the ICPR or import permit as Quarantine pests:
