The competition between Polish and Italian apple traders is fierce. With the prices of the Polish apples being similar to the Italian ones, buyers will always look at quality. At the moment Italy does have the better quality apple, but according to one Polish trader this can change in a couple of years.

The fact that the Polish apple season has its issues is a known fact to everyone by now. Anna Zasiewska is an account manager for Polish apple trader Bialski Owoc, thinks they can still meet the demand for their regular Gala customers: “The frosts during the spring impacted the early varieties like Royal Gala, Lobo and Cortland. We won’t even have enough quantity for the Polish market. However the Galas are also the variety of apples that are doing relatively well in the market in terms of demand. The cheaper varieties like Idared and Gloster are also quite popular, we have received a lot of inquiries about them.”

The Italians are the biggest competitors to Polish apples this season, mostly due to the prices for the Polish and Italian apples being very similar. Thus, it’s all about the quality, says Zasiewska: “For sure Italy is our competitor, because they shape the price on the market. Currently we have similar or the same prices as Italy, which is not good for the Polish export. To be successful, everyone needs cheaper prices in Poland than they are in Italy. As we know, in general Italy still has better quality in their apples than Poland does. I think Poland will have better quality apples than Italy in a few years, or at least be on a par with them, because Polish farmers still grow their orchards with the latest agricultural tech.”
