Import rates for German pears have remained virtually unchanged from 2014 to 2018. Only in 2018 there was a slight reduction of about 5,000 tonnes. The import prices of the pears were slightly unstable, as a report by the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food shows.

Reduced import volume in 2018 due to late frosts last year
An importer and marketer commented: "Of course, the 2017 frosts were one reason for the reduced import volumes of 2018." The low availability in Germany and the surrounding countries resulted in a price increase, which made the pears less attractive for the trade.

"Pears are often price-sensitive. Conference pears have become more popular in recent years, but if the price isn't right, we see that the segment is quickly being replaced by another product." This meant that lacking supplies from the Benelux were replaced less frequently by more expensive import goods.

"No more German pears at this time"
For 2019, the importer expects stable import volumes: "The quality of the German goods has suffered very much from the heat. At this time we have no German pears in stock and rely on goods from the Benelux countries." As far as sales volumes are concerned, the expert does not see any major changes this year, with the options for Benelux Conference pears improving. Availability is expected to be sufficient in July.

Seasonality and regionality are still relatively important in the pears. The share of organic pears has been growing slowly but steadily for some years now, the marketer concluded.

BLE report on the market and price situation at the end of March:
South Africa dominated the market with many varieties: first and foremost there was the Williams Christ and Rosemarie, followed by Cheeky and Abate Fetel. The Packham's Triumphs were often too small and not ripened enough, so they generated little demand. The additions of Argentine Williams Christ intensified.

In Hamburg, diverging quality and various packaging units created a wide open price range. New to the range were Chilean Flamingos that arrived in Frankfurt. Due to increased competition, demand for European batches dropped off slightly. In this segment, Italian Abate Fetels prevailed, but these were more expensive than the South African goods, which affected sales in turn.

Sales of Santa Maria and Williams Christ from Italy also slowed down. The quality of Dutch club varieties left much to be desired in Frankfurt. Domestic, Dutch and Belgian Conferences completed the event. Steady sales meant that prices often remained at the same levels.
