Biosecurity Awareness Month

Welcome to Biosecurity Awareness Month, a chance for us all to take stock of the critical role biosecurity practices play in maintaining our industry and its future success.

by Rachel Masters, NZAPI Biosecurity Manager

Effective biosecurity practices are essential to the success of New Zealand’s apple and pear sector.

They protect against unwanted pests and diseases that can disrupt operations, damage crops, and lead to costly delays or market closures. By safeguarding the health of our natural assets, biosecurity helps maintain consistent supply and product quality.

The rewards derived from efficient biosecurity practices are substantial.

Whether dealing with orchard pests or contamination risks, every part of the supply chain benefits. Good biosecurity ensures businesses can meet customer expectations, maintain certifications, and build long-term trust with domestic and international buyers. It is not just a protective measure; it’s a strategic asset.

Good biosecurity enhances New Zealand’s reputation as a reliable, trustworthy, and high-integrity supplier of premium produce, opening doors to global markets and supporting long-term growth.

In 2024,  New Zealand's apple and pear industry delivered $2.5 billion of total economic impact to the national economy; much of which would be at risk if we were to suffer a significant incursion.

NZAPI has a goal for the sector to double export revenue by 2035. However, if a biosecurity response were to occur in one of the main growing regions, this could severely impact Orchard Gate Returns and our potential to reach this milestone.

So, for this very reason, NZAPI is taking the month of August as an opportunity to recognise the critical role of New Zealand’s strong national biosecurity systems and its vital place in supporting the sustainability and profitability of orchards, packhouses, and exporters.

How does NZAPI contribute to biosecurity efforts?
