Field Notes: Summer 2026

Date: 22 Jan 2026

Over two decades, New Zealand's apple and pear industry has seen firsthand the benefits of science-led innovation on our global competitiveness.

Our own industry-led research has delivered world-leading bioprotection and market access solutions, with science that only New Zealand can do. But for how much longer will this be the case?

Across the globe our competitors are investing heavily in research and development. If we don’t match that ambition, we risk losing our edge. NZAPI's R&D programme consistently delivers incremental improvements and options to tackle known and emerging challenges, however the pace of global change demands more.

We need security in our innovation pipeline and a new generation of scientists with tactical industry experience. We must bridge today’s proven practices with tomorrow’s transformative ideas by investing in high-risk, high-reward technologies that have the potential to revolutionise the sector’s productivity. However, this is something we cannot do as industry alone.

This year’s general election could be a pivotal moment. Government-backed, industry-led research is essential to stay competitive. NZAPI has shared this message with our elected officials and a wide range of stakeholders.

R&D is critical when operating in a global environment and access to non-commercial funding will help determine whether projects such as those in this newsletter can continue.
