Tasman’s Mel Ewers has been honoured with the New Zealand Apples & Pears Incorporated (NZAPI) Outstanding Contribution Award, in recognition of her decades of service, leadership, and commitment to the sector.
For close to 50 years, Mel has quietly made an extraordinary contribution to the sector, supporting growers, packhouses, exporters, and industry organisations through her expertise in compliance, logistics, quality assurance, market access, training, and biosecurity.
Throughout her career, Mel has built a reputation as a trusted advisor and mentor, generously sharing her knowledge without hesitation and helping others in the sector navigate increasingly complex industry requirements.
Colleagues describe her as practical, authentic, and deeply committed to helping others succeed.
NZAPI Board Chair Andrew Gibbs said Mel’s contribution to the industry extended far beyond her formal roles.
“Mel is one of those rare people whose influence can be felt right across our industry. For decades she has quietly supported growers, businesses and industry initiatives, sharing her knowledge freely and helping others achieve high standards.
“She has never sought recognition or the spotlight, but her integrity, leadership and willingness to help others have earned her enormous respect and multiple nominations for this award. The New Zealand apple and pear industry is stronger because of Mel’s contribution, and we are delighted to recognise her contribution.”
Mel began her career with ENZA, supporting growers in the Nelson region, before spending more than 20 years as Compliance and Logistics Manager at Hoddys Fruit Co. Alongside her day-to-day responsibilities, she has assisted packhouses throughout New Zealand to implement best-practice compliance systems and has played an important role in training new phytosanitary inspectors entering the industry.
Her willingness to mentor others, combined with her depth of knowledge and practical approach, has made her an invaluable resource for organisations and individuals across the sector.
Despite her extensive experience, Mel remains committed to continuous learning and continues to share that knowledge generously with others.
The Outstanding Contribution Award recognises individuals who have made a significant and lasting impact on New Zealand’s apple and pear industry. Mel’s dedication, humility, and unwavering commitment to industry success make her a highly deserving recipient of the 2026 award
